BUDGET HEARING

MAY 11, 2009

MINUTES

 

PRESENT:                 George Hotaling, Terry Hait, Michael Jonker, Greg Starheim, Carl Mummenthey, Dulcie Fowler, Jonathan Hillis, Dan Singletary

 

ABSENT:                   Andy Van Glad

 

At 7:30 p.m. Board of Education Vice President George Hotaling called the meeting to order.                                                   

Mr. Mummenthey introduced members of the Board of Education:  George Hotaling (Vice President); Terry Hait , Greg Starheim, Michael Jonker and President Andy Van Glad (not in attendance)

Mr. Mummenthey welcomed everyone and thanked the Board of Education, faculty and staff, and the Budget Task Force for their help in the budget process.  He then did a PowerPoint presentation of the 2009-2010 budget.  He asked if anyone had any questions. 

 

Dan Singletary asked if Mr. Mummenthey had done any work to see what the equalization rates are for the various towns in our district.  Mr. Mummenthey stated that he does have the equalization rates but we use the ones that are set in June/July of the previous year.

 

Greg Starheim asked Dan Singletary if it would be a benefit if a delegate from our Board of Education to be present at their town board meetings.  Mr. Singletary welcomed Board participation at town meetings.

Mr. Mummenthey reviewed the ballot initiatives which include the bus vote and board vacancy.  He explained we will continue financing buses we purchase due to the state aid reimbursement schedule.  He then introduced Board Candidate Greg Starheim.

Greg Starheim said he has enjoyed working with the current Board of Education and looks forward to working with them in the future.  He would like to look at offering students more choices for college credits so that our programs are more competitive with larger schools.  He also noted that schools will continue to face fiscal challenges.

Mr. Mummenthey said he presented the budget to the Town Board, the Jefferson Fire Department and the Senior Citizens.  He will present to the Town Board on Thursday, May 14.

Michael Jonker made a motion seconded by Terry Hait to appoint Dulcie Fowler, District Clerk, as Chairperson for the Annual Meeting and Election on May 19, 2009.                                        Motion Carried 4-0

Greg Starheim made a motion seconded by Michael Jonker to establish the date and time for next year’s Budget Hearing to be Monday, May 10, 2010 at 7:30 p.m.                                                       Motion Carried 4-0

Terry Hait made a motion seconded by Greg Starheim to declare a 2005 Dodge Caravan (C-5), vin #1C4GP45R75B199004, with approximately 120,602 miles, as surplus, and authorizes the Superintendent to offer the van for sale by competitive, sealed bid.                   Motion Carried 4-0

At 8:44 p.m., Michael Jonker made a motion seconded by Terry Hait to go into Executive Session.                                        Motion Carried 4-0

At 8:54 p.m., Greg Starheim made a motion seconded by Terry Hait to go out of Executive Session and into regular session.    Motion Carried 4-0
