Jefferson Central School
District is a small rural district at the edge of
Schoharie County in the foothills of the Catskill
Mountains between the towns of Stamford and Cobleskill.
The school district is 70 square miles and includes the
village of Jefferson, and portions of the townships of
Jefferson, Harpersfield, Stamford, Gilboa, Kortright,
and Summit. The school is the center of the community
and has the support of the community.
The major employment in the area
is found with the school, agriculture, and with
employers in outlying communities.
The average K-12 school population
at Jefferson Central ranges from 290 to 310 students,
which are all housed within a single building. There is
generally only one class per grade level. The average
class size in k-6 ranges from 16-23 students and 20-32
students in 7-12.
Jefferson has 31 full time faculty
members with most of the teachers having at least 10 or
more years of experience. Jefferson Central prides
itself on the personal and professional education it
provides its students. There are also 11
paraprofessionals who support all students on a daily
basis. Even though we are a small school, the amount of
support that the students receive at all levels is quite
high. We believe that we can reach all our students and
help them succeed in whatever academic program they are
in. The elementary program is strong with a full day
Kindergarten program and a First Grade Reading Recovery
Program. The Reading Recovery Program's goal is to
bring up all first graders to reading on grade level by
the end of the first grade. Jefferson Central offers
full time Spanish education in grades 7-11 with a
college level course offering for seniors as well as a
comprehensive computer program in grades K-12. Jefferson Central has less than a 1% drop out
rate and over 80% of the students graduating from
Jefferson go on for higher education.
Jefferson Central School has 16%
of its student population receiving special education
services utilizing a full inclusion program.
Jefferson Central School is a
member of the Otsego-Northern Catskills BOCES and
utilizes the programs and services available through
BOCES. This includes occupational education classes at
the Grand Gorge Campus as well as other professional
services.
